Buying a Used Electric or Hybrid Car
What to know before buying a used EV or hybrid: battery health, range, charging at home, warranties and running costs.
Used electric cars and hybrids can save a lot on fuel and maintenance. Here is what to check.
Battery health
Ask for the battery's state of health or estimated range when fully charged. Most batteries lose a little capacity over the years, but many last well beyond 100,000 miles.
Range for your life
Add up your longest normal day of driving and add a cushion for cold weather, which can cut range noticeably.
Charging at home
A regular outlet adds a few miles per hour. A 240-volt home charger refills most cars overnight. Check whether your power company offers lower night rates.
Warranty
Many makers cover the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and that coverage often transfers to the next owner. Confirm the start date.
Running costs
No oil changes, fewer brake jobs thanks to regenerative braking, and lower fuel costs. Tires can wear faster because EVs are heavy.
