How to Buy a Used Car: a Step-by-Step Checklist
A simple checklist for buying a used car: set a budget, research, check the history, test drive, inspect and close the deal with confidence.
Buying a used car is easier when you take it one step at a time. Here is the checklist our team gives friends and family.
1. Set your budget first
Decide on a monthly payment and a total price before you fall in love with a car. Include insurance, fuel and maintenance. Our payment calculator shows how down payment, term and rate change the numbers.
2. Get pre-qualified
Knowing what a lender will approve keeps you shopping in the right price range and speeds up the paperwork later. Pre-qualifying does not affect your credit score.
3. Narrow it down online
Filter by body style, mileage and price, then compare two or three finalists side by side. Look at the number of owners, accident history and service records.
4. Test drive with a plan
Drive on the highway and on rough roads. Listen for noises, check the brakes, try every button, and make sure the seats and visibility work for you.
5. Get an inspection
Ask for the dealer's inspection report, and feel free to have your own mechanic look. A good dealer will welcome it.
6. Know your trade-in value
Get your trade-in offer in writing before you negotiate, so you can see the full deal clearly.
7. Read before you sign
Check the price, fees, rate, term and any add-ons on the buyer's order. Ask about anything you do not understand. At Plano Motor Group we walk you through every line.
